I never quite got the expression “You can’t have your cake and eat it” until I checked its meaning just now.

Rather obviously, in retrospect, I see it means you can’t both keep your tasty treats and chomp ’em down. Once you’ve eaten your cake, it’s gone. The things that become clear at 54, eh?
